[Finished] Missing Pieces (BTS) ·
  • Byung
  • This probably has been one of the worst weekends I’ve experienced in a long time. All through the weekend, I kept thinking about my conversation with Minji on Friday. She looked so angry but not because it was my father who got thugs to ransack her apartment but at the fact I left. I thought I was doing the right thing but clearly, she didn’t seem to share my views.
  • She looked hurt by what I said as well. I kept thinking about what she said – her panic attack and her collapsing. I’m worried about her and on Saturday I even passed by her apartment. I asked around but one of the neighbours said they saw her and Yun leave with some boys and some bags. She probably left with Jungkook and the others. I don’t know why she loves to hang around them so much. I mean they're idols - why would they be interested in two normal girls, however, awesome they are?
  • I wanted to pick my phone and text her, remembering what she said to me before I walked away - ‘I’m so angry at you Byung, *ed off really but I don’t want us to become strangers.’ Why does she still want us to talk after I *ed up so badly? I don’t even deserve her friendship. When did you start caring so much about the opinions of others about you? I ask myself as I down another glass of soju. I don’t even remember which bottle I am on right now. I’ve lost complete count but I do know that I’ve been drinking for quite some time.
  • My vision is slightly blurry and the noises around me sound distorted. My sense of smell isn’t even working properly right now. My stomach feels weird too so I decide to get up, having had enough to drink but my feet feel wobbly. Somehow, I manage to make it to the bar as I take out my money and pay.
  • ‘Are you going to be okay?’ The bartender asks as he hands me back the change which I push back.
  • ‘Keep them tipssss…and yeah, I’ll be fine.’ I say, giving him a smile that says leave me alone and don’t ask questions. I know he’s just trying to help and I’m being a * but that’s not really new. I’m constantly being a * to everyone around me. I’m surprised Mark and Seob have stuck with me all these years.
  • I leave the bar, staggering and for a moment I have to hold against the wall. I try to shake off the effects of the alcohol and get back to my senses as I continue to walk. Before I know it, I hear footsteps hurrying behind me. I stop and turn slightly and I realize that I am surround by four men.
  • ‘Well, well, well if it isn’t Mr. Oh’s precious son – Byung Hoon.’ One of them says, sarcasm dropping with every word he says.
  • ‘What do you want?’ I ask, turning my head around to look at each one of them. They have nasty looks on their face and I know this is not some random mugging.
  • ‘Your father is a rival of my father. Do you know why?’ He asks but I stay silent… for now. ‘He drove my father out of business. My father went completely bankrupt and had to see the company he owned because your father ate him up alive.’ He says angrily. He’s seething with every word he says.
  • ‘And how exactly is that related to me?’ I ask, trying to play it cool as they continue to encircle me. ‘Besides… it only means my father outwitted yours. Not exactly my problem.’ I say. I see the one who was speaking turn red with anger and I silently curse at myself. Damn it Byung – you never know when to keep your mouth shut – do you?
  • Their leader takes the first swing at me. I manage to duck it which only infuriates him more. He growls as he comes at me again but I side step, sending him crashing against another one of the members but my luck seems to have run out. One of them kicks me from behind forcing me down to one knee. He grabs me from behind and I hear the leader laugh.
  • ‘Try to escape now *.’ He says as he punches me across the face. Damn – his punch is very strong. It sends me recoiling back as blood comes out of my lip. He punches me again and again and as the one holding me drops me down to the ground, I feel several kicks to my body. I groan in pain but I’m not able to do anything.
  • Minji
  • It’s Sunday evening and Yun and I have been driven home by the boys. Yun and I start to unpack our clothes as we throw everything in the laundry. ‘It’s so quiet now after spending the weekend with the boys and Yoona.’ Yun says with a pout.
  • ‘Yeah it feels weird without them, right?’ I ask as I head to the fridge and I open it with a frown. ‘We’re missing a few things.’ I say.
  • ‘Really? Want to go to the convenience story really quick? They stay open till ten.’ She says.
  • ‘Don’t worry about it. I’ll go – you can finish unpacking and clearing everything. I’m going to buy some milk, bread, eggs, ramen… do you need anything in particular?’ I ask.
  • `Hmm can you buy the laundry soap and some chocolate please? I’ve been craving it like crazy.’ She says.
  • ‘Got it.’ I say giving her a thumbs up. I grab my wallet, phone and keys as I start heading outside. I walk towards the convenience store when I hear a lot of commotion going on. I gulp, knowing there’s a fight going on. My mind tells me to keep walking but my heart tells me to stop, knowing someone might need my help. I look on and see four guys beating and kicking at someone who is on the ground.
  • I feel rage consuming my body. I really, really hate bullies and when they gang up on someone. Not fighting one to one shows you’re weaker than the other one and cannot take them on your own. I realize there are four of them and there’s only me – I may be a good fighter but my chances of not getting hurt are pretty slim… but I can’t let him, whoever he is alone.
  • ‘Had enough Oh Byung-Hoon?’ One of them asks. My eyes go wide at the mention of his name. That’s all it takes for me to react. I break into a run and jump as I kick one of them in the chest, sending him crashing down. I hear him cry out in pain as he holds to his chest. My kick may have fractured or even broke a rib or two.
  • ‘What the hell?’ One of them calls out. I look at Byung’s body on the ground as he groans but at least he is moving and conscious. I look over at the remaining three as they line up next to each other. ‘You’re going to pay for that.’ He says and I nod, knowing he’s more than likely to be right. They rush at me but I duck and roll forward to the other side. Maybe luck is on my side as I see a metal pipe.
  • Normally, I would never use a weapon, especially something that can be deadly but it’s three against one until the other one decides to stand up and fight as well. The one who appears to be the leader sends the other ones first and I sigh. I grab the pipe and swing it, hitting the taller one on the arm, stunning him a bit. As I do, I kick the other one with a spinning kick which hits him against the mouth.
  • I go back to the taller one and hit him behind the knee with the pipe. He falls to one knee with a yell. I punch him with all the strength I can muster. My fist connects to his jaw with a loud crack. The other one I had kicked comes back as he tries to hold me from behind while the boss walks towards me, flicking his knife about. In the grapple, I let go of the pipe I’m holding, my only advantage and weapon.
  • ‘You’re a good fighter, I’ll give you that. It’s a pity we have to ruin that pretty face of yours but you should have stayed out of it.’ He says as he is only a few inches away from me.
  • ‘It’s kind of not in my nature.’ I reply, as I raise my leg and hit him in the balls. It’s a classless move but the only one I can do right now. The boss doubles over as he falls to the ground and the one holding me captive flinches with surprise. I use that to my advantage as I elbow him in the stomach and then grab him from the side and hip toss him to the ground. I heave with exertion as I try to catch my breath. I run to Byung who looks at me with wide eyes.
  • ‘Mi-Minji?’ He asks and I nod. I can smell the strong smell of alcohol in his breath. ‘Wh-what are you doing here?’ He asks.
  • ‘Clearly getting you out of trouble, as always. Can you stand up?’ I ask and he nods. He groans as he goes to stand up and I go to help him. We turn around, only to see the one I had kicked in the chest finally standing up. ‘Took you long enough.’ I mutter. ‘Hold on.’ I say to Byung who rests against the wall.
  • The guy smirks as he pulls out his own knife. Great! Just awesome! I think to myself. He comes at me as we trade in a punch and dodge game. He keeps trying to hit me and I keep dodging but I can’t keep up this forever. I go to kick him but he is ready as he blocks it. I go to punch him but he grabs my arm and twists it and I can’t help but cry out a little. He pulls me closer and I try to elbow him in the face but he blocks again. As I twist out of his grip, he slashes at my arm with his knife. I hiss because it stings but it’s not even deep. It won’t even need any stitches.
  • ‘I loved this shirt *.’ I say as I take my stance. I motion him to come at me and he smirks. This time, I jump, twirl and do a flying kick which hits him across the face, sending him to the ground. I take off my jumper and grab the knife with it and then run to Byung. ‘Come on. We’ve got to go! Now before they wake up again.’ I say and he nods.
  • I put his arm around my neck as I begin to hurry with him dragging behind. ‘We need to get you to a hospital.’ I say.
  • ‘No, Minji – no hospital. I… I hate hospitals.’ He says, clearly getting a little bit sober.
  • ‘Byung you’re hurt. We need to see the extent of your injuries.’ I say but he shakes his head. ‘Why are you being so stubborn?’ I yell.
  • ‘I hate hospitals because they remind me of my mother.’ He says and I sigh, remembering how his mother is dead. He might have seen her in a hospital bed and got traumatized by it.
  • ‘Fine but we’re going to the police station.’ I say. He doesn’t complain and lets me take him. It’s a tiring process but I finally arrive, slightly out of breath. Two cops come rushing at us as they take him off of me.
  • ‘What happened? Why didn’t you take him to the hospital?’ One of the male cops asks.
  • ‘No hospital!’ Byung yells and I look at the cop and I shrug. ‘I was jumped on… someone who blames my father… for driving his father out of business.’ Byung says. I almost choke on my own spit when I hear the reason. The cop sighs and shakes his head before they lead Byung to sit down on the chair.
  • ‘By the way, I managed to grab this from one of the attackers. Maybe you can lift off finger prints from it.’ I say as I hand him the covered knife. He stares at me for a moment.
  • ‘How did you even think about this?’ The other cop asks as he takes it. I see an amused smile on his face and I can’t help but feel slightly proud of myself. How did I think of it – well, I’ve watched a lot of crime shows, read a lot of crime books and I’ve had countless discussions with my father about crimes and the importance of preserving evidence.
  • ‘Minji?’ I hear a familiar voice saying. I close my eyes and flinch as I recognize the voice. I turn around slowly as I see my father there.
  • ‘Hello Appa.’ I say as I wave awkwardly at him. His eyes go wider as he takes me in. I wonder how I look – probably a mess. Unlike the movies, fighting in the street doesn’t leave you looking pretty and tidy.
  • ‘Appa? You’re the DA’s daughter?’ The cop asks astonished. ‘Mr. Kyung – I wasn’t aware she was your daughter, I would have contacted you but they just arrived.’ The cop says but my father waves him off as he hurries next to me.
  • ‘What the hell happened sweetie? Tell me step by step.’ He says as he grabs me from the shoulders. He looks me up and down and then he grabs my arm. He frowns as he sees the scratch. ‘Doesn’t look too bad. Can you manage it?’ He asks.
  • ‘Of course Appa.’ I say with a nod. ‘I’m not sure what was happening before I arrived but maybe Byung can start and then I can fill you in.’ I say and he nods. I turn to Byung and kneel down in front of him. I see him holding at his own ribs. He has cuts all over his face and I sigh. ‘Byung… do you know where you are?’ I ask.
  • ‘The police station.’ He says and I nod. ‘You want to know what happened?’ He asks and I nod once again. ‘I was at the bar. I admit, I drank quite a bit but I didn’t start any problems. I left and then I heard footsteps behind me so I turned around and I realized I was surrounded by four goons. He said something about our fathers being rivals in business. I don’t know but we ended up in a fight but they got the best of me. I’m not sure what happened next but I think you arrived.’ He says and I nod as I turn to my father and the cop.
  • ‘I went out to buy groceries and I heard the fight. I looked on to see if I can help. I saw the four guys beating him so I jumped in. We ended up in a fight and then I grabbed the knife and took Byung away.’ I say. The cop looks at me in disbelief.
  • ‘You took down four armed guys?’ He asks.
  • ‘Of course she did. She’s a champion in Taekwondo.’ My father says proudly as he places his hand on my shoulder.
  • ‘I had to use some less than classy moves like using a pipe or kicking someone in the balls but I had no choice.’ I say and he nods.
  • ‘It doesn’t matter Minji sweetie. You managed to get away and great thinking about getting the knife. If they often get into fights and carry knives around with them, they are likely to be in the system. Using that knife, we can match the fingerprints or DNA to the system and bring them in. Now, how about we go to the hospital?’ He asks but Byung is quick to jump on his seat.
  • ‘No… please, no hospital.’ He says. My father looks at me and I nod.
  • ‘It reminds him of his mother. She died and I’m guessing his last memory of her is there so it might have, you know traumatized him or something.’ I say and my father nods in understanding.
  • ‘Then let’s take you home.’ My father says. ‘You got this?’ He asks, turning to the cop who nods. My father and I help Byung as we head to my father’s car. We place him in the back as he begins to doze off while my father and I go to the front.
  • ‘He’s always getting you mixed in fights.’ My father says, trying to keep emotions out of it as he begins to drive.
  • ‘He didn’t. Not this time. They attacked him because of who his father is not because he got into trouble. He was just lucky I was there.’ I say.
  • ‘Maybe but I don’t particularly like it. I know how much you can’t stand it when people fight, especially if they gang up on one but it’s dangerous.’ He says.
  • ‘You think I don’t know that Appa? Minho ended up dead because of a stupid fight. If Minho and Ji didn’t fight, Ji would not have accidentally pushed me off. I wouldn’t have fallen and Minho would not have jumped after me.’ I say.
  • ‘I know sweetie.’ He says as he grabs my hand and squeezes it. ‘You should text Yun, tell her you’re going to be late.’ He says and I nod as I take out my phone.
  • Minji: Heyy Yun… I’m going to be home late. I ran into some trouble but don’t worry I’m okay 😊
  • I go to put it away when it begins to vibrate one after the other and I realize I accidentally sent it to the group chat instead of just Yun. Well * – this is going to be fun.
  • Kookie: Trouble?!
  • Kookie: What do you mean???
  • Kookie: Where are you???
  • Jiminie: Minji what’s going on???
  • Jiminie: Are you sure you’re okay?
  • Yun: You were just supposed to go to the convenience store? What happened?
  • Kookie: Min, answer the phone!!! Why aren’t you texting back??
  • Taehyungie: What’s going on?
  • Jiminie: Minji got in some sort of trouble!!
  • Taehyungie: What?? What trouble?
  • Kookie: And now she’s not answering!!
  • Minji: I’m just trying to keep up with you guys. You type really fast.
  • Minji: I’m okay guys! Please, don’t worry! 😊
  • Kookie: Oh thank God but what happened?
  • Joonie: Do you need any help?
  • Yoona: Where are you now?
  • Hobi: Do you need one of us to come pick you up or something?
  • Jin: I’m out already so I can do that.
  • Suga: Guys give her a chance to breathe and explain. The important thing is she is okay. Don’t overwhelm her. Minji take your time and explain what happened, if you want to.
  • Minji: I was walking by and I saw some guys beating someone. It ended up being Byung. I took him to the police station but don’t worry, everything is fine. I’m with Appa right now. We’re just taking him home because he doesn’t want to go to the hospital.
  • Kookie: I swear that guy is going to get you seriously hurt one of these days!!
  • Taehyungie: I have to agree to what Kookie said Minji. You’ve got to be careful.
  • Jiminie: Did you get involved in the fight?
  • Joonie: You’re okay though, right? You’re not hurt, right?
  • Minji: Yes, I’m fine Oppa.
  • Jiminie: You didn’t answer my question.
  • Minji: Yes, I had to. I had no other choice. They were beating him up and they would have seriously hurt him. They had knives, I had to do something.
  • Kookie: KNIVES? WHAT DO YOU MEAN KNIVES??
  • Suga: Kookie calm down. She said she’s fine and she can take care of herself.
  • Kookie: Hyung, she said they had knives!! How can I not worry?
  • Minji: You’re cute when you worry like that but everything is fine, I promise. I’m not hurt.
  • Kookie: Aish! Okay fine. Can you call me as soon as you are home?
  • Minji: It might be late Kooks. You need to rest for your rehearsals 😊
  • Hobi: He won’t be able to sleep anyways so it’s better if you call him, trust me 😊
  • Jiminie: Yeah, it will put all our minds to rest. So please, call him and text us 😊
  • Minji: Fine, I will 😊
  • Jin: And if you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask.
  • Joonie: Jin is right, please call us if you need anything.
  • Minji: Thank you guys ️❤️️❤️️
  • I put my phone away and look at Appa who is smiling at me but has a curious look on his face. ‘What?’ I ask.
  • ‘Your phone has been ringing non-stop, one message after the other and I doubt all those messages came from Yun, right?’ He asks and I nod. ‘So, want to tell me who you were talking to?’ He asks.
  • ‘The boys, Yun and Yoona and I have a group chat. I accidentally sent the message there and it sent them in a whole panic station, especially Jungkook and Jimin.’ I say.
  • ‘Jungkook I get because he’s your brother but what about Jimin?’ He asks with a knowing smile.
  • ‘Appa!!’ I yell as I playfully hit him on the shoulder. Although playful, he still groans. ‘Serves you right.’ I say. I can feel my cheeks burning which makes him laugh even more. I look back to where Byung is sitting and I sigh. ‘You think he’ll be okay?’ I ask.
  • ‘He’s going to be sore but he’ll be okay.’ Appa reassures me. We arrive at his house and my father stops the car. I close my eyes as I remember everything that Mr. Oh has put me through. ‘Are you going to be okay seeing him? I mean after what happened with your apartment?’ He asks.
  • ‘You know me Appa. I’m tougher than I look.’ I say with a wink. He smiles and gets out of the car. He goes to ring the bell while I help Byung out. ‘Come on, you’ve got to help me Byung. You’re really heavy for a skinny guy.’ I say.
  • ‘I don’t suppose you’re very light.’ He murmurs back and I shake my head. The door opens and I see Mrs. Hun there.
  • ‘BYUNG!!’ She yells as she comes running out. I see the poor lady on the edge of tears as she holds his face in her hands. ‘My boy! What happened?’ She asks as she turns to look at me. I look up and see Mr. Oh frozen by the door as he stares in horror at his son.
  • ‘What… what happened?’ He asks, turning to my father who places a hand on his shoulder.
  • ‘He got jumped because of some business rivalry with you. Luckily, my daughter was there and helped him out and took him to the police station. The incident has been reported. He kept refusing to go to the hospital.’ My father explains. Mr. Oh looks at me and sighs.
  • ‘Can you help Mrs. Hun take him to his room? I need to talk about some things with Mr. Kyung.’ He asks, turning to me. I gulp and nod as Mrs. Hun and I take Byung by the arms and lead him upstairs and as we do, I can hear my father speaking with Mr. Oh.
  • ‘You don’t deserve her help after what you did to her but rest assured, she’s not doing it for you but for Byung.’ I hear my father saying. I sigh as we reach Byung’s room and lay him on the bed.
  • ‘Can you bring me some first aid?’ I ask, turning to Mrs. Hun. She nods and hurries out of the room and I turn to Byung once again. I take off his shoes and lay him properly on the bed. I prop the pillow under his head and he groans a bit. Mrs. Hun comes back with the box, a bowl with lukewarm water and some cloths.
  • ‘Do you need me to help with those?’ She asks but I shake my head. ‘Okay then, I’ll be downstairs if you need me.’ She says and I nod. I watch her leave the room and I sigh as I roll up my sleeves and grab the cloth and dip it in the water. I squeeze the excess water and sit down next to Byung as I begin to wipe his face. He has some dried blood on his forehead and I begin to rub at it. He groans as he opens his eyes.
  • ‘What are you doing?’ He asks as he grabs my wrist to stop me. I shake off his hand and continue to rub.
  • ‘I’m helping you clean it off so it doesn’t get infected.’ I reply. He looks at me with big eyes that seem to scream at me but I’m not sure what the screams are.
  • ‘After what I did to you?’ He asks and I sigh. I pull my hand down and look at him. ‘Minji… I left you when you needed me and when you confronted me about it, I waked away.’ He says.
  • ‘You thought you were protecting me from your father and I know why you left. I understand because I have gone through that before.’ I say as I recall how ashamed I had felt when trying to look at Minho’s family. ‘It’s not your fault and I don’t want you to blame yourself.’ I say and he sighs. ‘Why did you get drunk tonight anyway?’ I ask.
  • ‘I don’t know. I just had a lot of thoughts in my mind and I wanted to forget everything for a while.’ He admits.
  • ‘Did it work?’ I ask as I return to rubbing his face. This time I move to his cheek which is grazed and swollen. He winces and I pull back a little.
  • ‘Not really. It actually made everything worse. It was like my thoughts got louder.’ He admits as I finish cleaning his cheek.
  • ‘This is going to sting a bit.’ I say as I move to his lip. At least it’s not badly busted, just the corner of it. He nods and I start to clean it. He tenses up but relaxes a bit. ‘Don’t get drunk Byung. You tend to get into trouble when you do and I might not always be around to pull you out of it.’ I say.
  • ‘I know. I didn’t expect you to be there honestly. I wasn’t sure I was seeing it right.’ He says. I drop the cloth and grab the cream as I squirt some on my finger. ‘What were you thinking though? There were four of them? You could have gotten really hurt.’ He says.
  • ‘Was I supposed to let you get beat up and do nothing?’ I ask as I place the cream on his lip. 'Besides, you know me - I'm tough and for the record, I didn't get hurt. Now, take off your shirt.’ I instruct.
  • ‘What? You want to see my abs?’ He jokes as I give him a glare. ‘Okay, okay I was just joking around jeez.’ He says as he slowly removes his shirt to revealed some bruised ribs. I sigh as I lower my head and touch his rib area. ‘How do you know so much about this stuff?’ He asks.
  • ‘I’m naturally smart.’ I reply with half a smirk. He tilts his head to the side as he looks at me. ‘I’m just joking but the truth is my Eomma is a doctor and Appa a lawyer and they have always talked to me a lot about their professions. They kept teaching me tricks of the trade so to call them – so first aid is something I’m pretty good at and I know my way around the law which is why I knew to take the knife with us.’ I say and he nods. I finish wrapping the bandage around him and he sighs.
  • He goes to rearrange himself when his eyes fall to my arm. He sits up and grabs my arm with his hand quite tightly. ‘What happened to your arm?’ He asks.
  • ‘It’s nothing.’ I say, trying to shrug him off but he doesn’t let go. ‘Seriously, Byung. It’s just a scratch.’ I say.
  • ‘Sit down.’ He orders and I roll my eyes. He practically pulls me down and forces me to sit on the bed. He takes my sleeve and continues to tear it. He grabs one of the cloths and dips it in the water. ‘I thought you said you didn’t get hurt.’ He grumbles.
  • ‘It’s nothing Byung. Don’t make a fuss about it. That’s my brother’s job.’ I say with a smile as I remember how panicked he was. Jungkook was pretty cute but I kind of feel sorry for him – I keep making him worried. I’m pretty sure he didn’t expect his sister to be such a trouble magnet.
  • ‘You found out who your brother is?’ He asks and I nod. ‘I’m glad.’ He adds as he starts to clean off my wound which is pretty superficial.
  • ‘Can you promise not to tell anyone?’ I ask and he nods. ‘It’s Jungkook.’ I say and he stops for a moment, cloth in hand.
  • ‘Well, that explains why he doesn’t particularly like me and neither do his friends for the record.’ He says and I smile.
  • ‘It’s not like you have given them a reason to like you. You were kind of a * to them.’ I say and he nods.
  • ‘Yeah, I guess so but I mean, what brother would be happy to see their sister hang out with someone like me?’ He adds.
  • ‘Byung, you’re far from perfect but you’re not a bad guy. I know I said a lot of things last time, a lot of things out of anger. I’m sorry.’ I say. I feel his grip tighten on my arm.
  • ‘Don’t you dare apologize. You have nothing to apologize for – you were right. I acted like a coward and took off running to face my father instead of facing you. I’m the one who is sorry Monkey- I mean Minji.’ He says.
  • ‘You can call me Monkey again.’ I say and I see him let out a small smile. He manages to clean it all off and then grabs one of the gauges and puts it on.
  • ‘It’s not deep but it can still get infected.’ He says as he puts on the bandage and I roll my eyes.
  • ‘You should rest and I need to get back home. Are you coming to school tomorrow?’ I ask and he gives me a thumbs up. ‘Good. I’ll see you tomorrow.’ I say.
  • ‘Yes and thank you for everything… Monkey.’ He says and I nod as I leave the room. I go downstairs just as I see my father standing up. They both hear me and turn to look at me.
  • ‘How is he?’ Mr. Oh asks taking a step forward.
  • ‘He has some bruises but I think he’ll be okay.’ I say. I ball my hands into fists, not wanting to get into another confrontation with him.
  • ‘Thank you for saving my son.’ He says as he gives me a slight bow. ‘Is there any way to repay you?’ He asks and I scoff.
  • ‘You could pay Dong-Min’s medical expenses.’ I say before I can bite my tongue to keep my mouth shut.
  • ‘Consider it done.’ He says. I feel my eyes go wide at his sudden response which is nothing of what I expected. I expected him to start shouting in my face that I am accusing him of something he didn’t do. I expected him to smirk and say he doesn’t know anything but he just responds that he will. I look over at my father who nods.
  • ‘We will be leaving now. Call me if you need anything Mr. Oh regarding your son.’ My father says and Mr. Oh nods. We leave the house and I see Mrs. Hun by the door. She smiles at me and I wave as we go through the front door. We reach the car and I get in just as Appa starts to drive.
  • ‘I’ve never seen him be so friendly.’ I say unable to stop myself from commenting and I see my father smile.
  • ‘He wasn’t always a cold hearted *.’ He says and I turn slightly to look at him. ‘Mr. Oh and I were friends back when we were in high school. Do you remember that show? Meteor Garden and the group F4?’ He asks, referring to one of my favourite dramas and I nod. F4 was made up of four guys who were the most popular students – they were tall, handsome, rich but also highly intelligent. ‘I was in a group like that. We weren’t all rich but we were popular. There was Mr. Oh and Mr. Lee who were into business, Dr. Kang who is a surgeon now, Mr. Bing who is a big name in the fashion industry and Mr. Kwak and I who were interested in law.’ He explains.
  • ‘So what happened?’ I ask and he sighs. ‘Appa, tell me. You can’t start a story and not finish it.’ I say.
  • ‘We remained friends for a while, even after graduating from university but then everyone got busy. Then, one day I got a call from Mr. Oh – his wife had been brutally raped and murdered in front of him.’ He says. I gasp, loudly at the revelation. ‘His son was only five years old at the time, or something like that. The police never found them and I never discovered why they did that but after that Mr. Oh changed completely. He closed off everyone, except for Mr. Lee. Unlike the rest of us, Mr. Oh and Mr. Lee knew each other since childhood, like Yun and you. He became cold, uncaring and delved into his works. He didn’t care about right or wrong anymore. It was like he was holding a grudge against the whole world.’ He explains.
  • ‘Whoa. It kind of explains the way he is. I mean, I could barely keep it together when Minho died but to think that a loved one is killed like that in front of you…’ I say as I shiver. ‘It would drive anyone mad.’ I whisper and he nods with another sigh.
